Alternatives to Perplexity

Perplexity is an answer engine, not an assistant — retrieval is the product rather than a feature. That is also why people leave: once the research is done, it is weak at turning the result into a document, and it publishes very little hard specification.
The short answer
If you need search and drafting in one place, ChatGPT. If the job has shifted to writing, Claude. If you only needed the citations and wanted them free, Gemini gets you most of the way.

One by one
OpenAI · General-purpose work, the widest tool ecosystem
Search plus drafting in one place. Citation discipline is markedly weaker — it will assert without linking — but it is far stronger at turning the research into a finished document, and the specifications are published.
Google · Google Workspace users, files, video
Free, search-grounded, and it can carry the result straight into a Doc. The citation trail is looser than Perplexity's and the per-model context windows are unpublished, but for research that ends in a Google file it removes a step.
Anthropic · Writing, analysis, long documents
The swap for when the research is finished and the job is now writing. No live web search at all, so this is a hand-off rather than a replacement — but it is the best long-document tool here, with a documented 1M-token window.
xAI · High-volume generation, current topics
Real-time answers tied to X with search switched on, at the cheapest premium output price in this set ($6 per 1M tokens). Documentation is thinner than the big three, and with search off the training cutoff of 1 February 2026 shows immediately.
Microsoft · Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams
Worth it only if the answer has to land in a Word or PowerPoint file anyway — Copilot searches and writes in place, without the copy-paste step. Raw model quality is not competitive and its citations are inconsistent.
The other side
Nothing else here treats sources as the point. For anything that changed this week, Perplexity is the strongest tool in this comparison and its free tier is usable for real research. Do check the citations rather than trusting them — in our testing they exist on every answer but do not always support the claim they are attached to.
Questions
Gemini. Its free tier includes full app access and live search, and the results can go straight into a Doc. The citations are looser than Perplexity's — if the sourcing is the reason you use Perplexity, its own free tier is still the better free option.
Only Perplexity does this by design. ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Grok cite partially and inconsistently; Claude and DeepSeek do not cite live sources at all. This is the clearest single-tool advantage in the comparison.
Mistral Le Chat's paid plan is $14.99 against the $20 norm, and Grok's API output is the cheapest here at $6 per 1M tokens. Perplexity does not publish its Pro pricing in a form we could read at source, so a direct price comparison is not possible — check its own page.
ChatGPT comes closest, because it searches and drafts in the same session. The honest answer is that most people who do serious research run two tools — one for retrieval, one for drafting — which is also the case for running several models side by side.
