Alternatives to Gemini

Gemini's pull is that it reaches your Drive, Gmail and Docs directly — nothing else in this comparison does. People leave it for three reasons: the writing reads flat, Google does not publish per-model context windows, or they would rather not route more work through Google.
The short answer
If you want better prose, Claude. If you want sources you can check, Perplexity. If the problem is Google itself, Mistral Le Chat is EU-hosted and openly priced.

OpenAI · General-purpose work, the widest tool ecosystem
The obvious swap when you want a wider tool ecosystem and specifications you can actually read — OpenAI publishes per-model context windows and token pricing, Google does not. You lose the Drive and Gmail reach entirely.
Anthropic · Writing, analysis, long documents
Better prose and a documented 1M-token window. The swap if Gemini's drafts read flat and you do not need Drive access — but Claude has no live web search and no image generation, both of which Gemini does well.
Perplexity AI · Research, cited answers, anything current
If you were using Gemini mainly to look things up, an answer engine attaches sources to every claim. Gemini's citations are partial and inconsistent. The cost is that Perplexity is poor at drafting the document afterwards.
Microsoft · Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams
The same works-on-your-actual-files argument, moved to the Microsoft side: Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams instead of Docs, Sheets and Gmail. Model quality is not competitive, and the Copilot name covers several different products — check which one your licence includes.
Mistral AI · EU data preference, self-hosting, budget
The swap if the problem is Google itself. EU-hosted in France, $14.99 against Google's country-varying tiers, prices published plainly, and several models downloadable under Apache 2.0. Its own per-model context windows are unpublished too.
The other side
If your files are in Drive and your mail is in Gmail, Gemini's integration is worth more than a few points of model quality — it is the difference between editing a document and describing one. Its file handling is the best here (2GB video, 5,000-file repos), the free tier is genuinely capable, and it ships four documented image models up to 4K.
Questions
Several. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Mistral Le Chat, DeepSeek and Meta AI all run usable free tiers. Gemini's is among the most capable because it includes full app access rather than a reduced model, so "free" is not a like-for-like swap.
None of them match it. Gemini's published limits — 2GB per video, 5,000-file repositories — are the highest in this set, and it works on files already in Drive rather than on uploads. Claude and ChatGPT handle pasted and uploaded documents well; that is a different job.
Claude. It has the best prose and tone control here and a documented 1M-token context window, and it will critique a draft rather than just rewrite it. It has no web search, so pair it with something that does if your writing needs current facts.
Mistral Le Chat is hosted in France and is EU-hosted by default. Gemini itself can offer EU data residency depending on your Google Workspace configuration — that is a tenant setting, not a property of the consumer app, so verify it in your own admin console.
