Alternatives to Microsoft Copilot

Copilot is chosen for where it sits, not for the model behind it — it reads the file you are already in, across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. People leave because the output quality is not competitive, because the licensing is opaque, or because it struggles on real, messy spreadsheets.
The short answer
If you want a stronger model at a price you can read, ChatGPT at $20. If the output needs rewriting anyway, Claude. If the in-your-files argument is what you liked, Gemini does the same thing on the Google side.

One by one
OpenAI · General-purpose work, the widest tool ecosystem
A stronger model at a flat $20, with no licence puzzle to solve. You give up in-file editing entirely — everything becomes copy and paste — but the specifications and pricing are published, which Copilot's are not in any comparable form.
Google · Google Workspace users, files, video
The same works-on-your-actual-files argument on the Google side: Drive, Gmail and Docs instead of SharePoint, Outlook and Word. Better file limits (2GB video, 5,000-file repos) and a genuinely capable free tier.
Anthropic · Writing, analysis, long documents
The swap when Copilot's output needs rewriting before anyone sees it. Best prose and tone control here, plus a documented 1M-token window — but you paste files in rather than editing them in place, and there is no web search.
Perplexity AI · Research, cited answers, anything current
For the research half of the job, with sources attached to every claim. Copilot cites inconsistently. Perplexity will not draft the deck for you, so this replaces part of Copilot's work rather than all of it.
Mistral AI · EU data preference, self-hosting, budget
Cheapest paid plan here at $14.99 and EU-hosted in France, if the Office integration is not actually what you are paying for. Publishes prices plainly, which is the opposite of the Copilot licensing experience.
The other side
If your organisation runs on Microsoft 365, the integration is the product: no copy-paste, enterprise admin controls, tenant-level compliance, and one tool covering mail, documents and meetings. No alternative below replaces that. Just be clear which Copilot your licence actually includes — the name covers several different products at different prices.
Questions
It depends on whether you are paying for the model or the placement. ChatGPT is the stronger model at a published $20. Copilot's value is that it reads the file you are already in and carries your tenant's compliance settings — if your work is inside Office documents all day, that is worth more than model quality.
That is the single most common confusion here, and it is why we flag it. The Copilot name covers a free consumer chat, a Microsoft 365 add-on, and several enterprise products at different prices. Check the product name on your own licence before comparing it to anything.
Copilot itself has a limited free tier. Of the alternatives, Gemini's free tier is the most capable and is the closest free equivalent for document work, followed by ChatGPT, Claude and Mistral Le Chat.
This is where we found the least satisfying answer. Copilot struggles on messy real spreadsheets, and so does everything else here — none of the alternatives read a live workbook in place. Claude and ChatGPT handle exported data well once you paste or upload it.
